Wood as a material and its alternatives
Wood is a versatile raw material and the only renewable construction material. Wooden structures are usually characterised by a combination of different components that together deliver the best possible load-bearing capacity, thermal, acoustic and moisture insulation, fire resistance and a long service life.
PRODUCTION OF WOOD
It includes processes like felling, debarking and drying in the kiln. It has a negative carbon footprint, absorbs carbon dioxide and every derivative of wood can be reused.
ALTERNATIVES OF WOOD
BAMBOO
It can be used as an effective alternative for wood as its growing speed is fast and can be majorly grown in tropical countries like India .It has a very low carbon footprint and has a large tensile strength as compared to hardwoods. When used with proper treatments bamboo can be effectively used in construction.
WOODEN PLASTIC COMPOSITE(WPC)
It is a new alternative for wood, made up of wood waste and recycled plastic .It has a larger footprint than wood and consumes large fuel and water. But the amount of plastic in a whole reduces from land. It is termite resistant but the cost can be large.
